How Long Does It Take to Strip Powder Coating and E-Coat? A Complete Guide

One of the most common questions we hear from manufacturers, powder coaters, and industrial finishers is:
“How long does it take to strip powder coating or e-coat using Greensolv solutions?”

The short answer:
Anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on coating thickness, layers, temperature, and bath cleanliness.

Here’s a clear breakdown to help you plan production cycles more efficiently.

Standard Powder Coatings & E-Coats: 30–60 Minutes

Using Greensolv’s three precision-formulated immersion stripping solutions—

  • SteelStrip

  • AlumiStrip

  • AeroStrip

standard powder coatings and typical e-coats are fully removed in:

 30 to 60 minutes at 185°F (85°C)

This timing applies to most common industrial coatings, making Greensolv’s solutions an ideal choice for fast turnaround and consistent results.

Multi-Layer Coating Systems: Up to 2 Hours

If your parts have a layered system consisting of:

  • Primer

  • Top coat

  • Clear coat

…expect a longer dwell time.

Up to 2 hours for a full clean removal

Multi-layer systems take more time because each layer has different hardness characteristics and chemical resistance levels.

Stubborn or High-Performance Coatings: 4–8 Hours

Some coatings simply take more time, such as:

  • High-durability architectural coatings

  • Industrial primers designed to resist chemical attack

  • Thick automotive layers

  • Burned-on or aged coatings

For these tough systems:

Plan 4–8 hours for complete stripping

These long cycles are typically done overnight to optimize workflow.

How Many Batches Can You Strip Per Day?

When planning your production schedule, here’s a helpful benchmark:

2-hour cycle = 5 batches per day

During a standard 8-hour shift, you can typically run:

  • 4 batches during the workday

  • +1 overnight batch for maximum efficiency

This keeps your workflow predictable and helps you plan throughput with confidence.

Temperature: Your Most Important Efficiency Lever

Stripping speed is highly temperature-dependent.

A simple rule of thumb:

A 20°F (≈11°C) temperature increase cuts stripping time in half.

Example:

  • 165°F = 2-hour strip time

  • 185°F = 1-hour strip time

Maintaining the recommended temperature is one of the easiest ways to improve productivity without changing chemistry.

Solution Cleanliness Matters

Hot-bath immersion stripping is extremely reliable, but only if your solution is well maintained.

A clean, well-filtered bath ensures:

  • Faster and more predictable stripping times

  • Less sludge buildup

  • Longer solution life

  • Consistent batch-to-batch performance

Regular maintenance maximizes chemical efficiency and keeps your production running smoothly.

Reliable, Predictable, and Efficient Paint Stripping

Whether you’re removing powder coating, e-coat, or multilayer systems, Greensolv’s chemical stripping solutions deliver:

  • Fast cycle times

  • Consistent results

  • Predictable scheduling

  • Lower labor requirements compared to blasting or sanding

If you’re aiming to increase throughput or streamline your stripping process, Greensolv can help.
